We currently offer two ASDAN courses through our RDA group as follows:
1) ASDAN Towards Independence Programme;
Module in Animal Care with Horse Riding and Stable Management
The Towards Independence Programme provides a framework of activities through which personal, social and independence skills can be developed and accredited for those with severe learning difficulties. It is primarily aimed at Post-16 students but can be undertaken from age 14 onwards.
Towards Independence offers formal recognition for small steps of achievement towards a larger goal. Modules can be used separately and accumulated to build a record of personal achievement. The module we offer is in Animal Care with Horse Riding and Stable Management.
To achieve this module the candidate must complete 6 sections based on horse care and stable management skills. He/she will be asked to say; show; choose and make things. Evidence is collected through talking, signing or using a scribe, and presented via pictures/photographs or digital media.
2) ASDAN Animal Care Short Course
This course is designed for young people of all abilities, mainly aged between 13 and 19 years, (as well as adults and younger learners, where appropriate).
Short Courses are multi-level; the focus is on completing challenges and skills development according to individual ability, rather than attainment at a specific level.
The Animal Care Short Course can accredit between 10 and 60 hours of learners' activities and involvement in caring for all types of animals. These activties range from looking after domestic pets at home, to working with farm animals and wildlife in the community, to finding out about more exotic species at zoos and wildlife centres. Credits can be used towards other ASDAN Programmes.
The flexibility of ASDAN's Short Courses means they can be carried out in a variety of settings, over a time period to suit the individual. Challenge descriptions can be interpreted and adapted according to the situation.
